Everyone’s all excited about the winter solstice and the lunar eclipse coming together.  I can understand that; it hasn’t happened for a couple of hundred years.  I’m a little more excited about the solstice its ownself.  It means a few things to us Alaskans.

First off, winter has finally arrived in the Frozen Freakin’ North,  except for the fact that it’s kind of looked like it’s been here for a few months.  We’ve had about two straight weeks of at least 25 below zero temps with a couple of day’s worth of 40 below thrown in for good measure.

Second, and probably more important, the sun’s turning around.  For the last six months, we’ve lost about 7 minutes of sunlight each day.  Thursday, we start gaining sunlight again.  By next week, we’ll be gaining back that seven minutes each day.

Go, winter solstice!
